Scanello and Palazzo Loup

Scanello (Loiano) – via Provinciale 22

Having reached Scanello, with the lovely church of San Giovanni Battista dating back to the 1700s but of far more ancient origins, do not miss the opportunity to admire Palazzo Loup, an eighteenth-century residence that acquired its name in the nineteenth century from the owner, Monsieur Luigi Loup, a Swiss nobleman and expert in farming and animal husbandry.
Now a modern hotel surrounded by a park of age-old monumental trees, this was a place that vaunted some extraordinary guests and encounters in past centuries.

On the border between Tuscany and Emilia, the name derives from Mons Gothorum, a Goth settlement dating to the seventh century. From the mid–1200s until 1900s, the town was known as Scaricalasino and the name is now back in fashion. Trading has always been customary for this community and for centuries it was a rest station between Bologna and Florence, controlling the Raticosa pass, with the nearby customshouse between the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Mulino Mazzone

Piamaggio (Monghidoro) – via villa di mezzo

From Monghidoro, taking the direction of Madonna dei Fornelli, shortly after the village of Piamaggio continue towards Villa di Mezzo and immediately across the Mulino Mazzone woods. Built around 1700, the Mulino is the only working mill in the Savena valley. With its small artificial pool fed by the Rio del Piattello, its beautiful park and the loading canal that reflects the ancient trees, this is an ideal destination for a break. Mulino Mazzone can be visited upon reservation.

Castel dell’Alpi lake

Castel dell’Alpi (San Benedetto Val di Sambro)

From the Mulino Mazzone, the path leads to the Savena torrent as far as the Castel dell’Alpi lake. This is the only natural lake in the province of Bologna and around it there is a path offering a pedestrian circuit. On the left bank, the old San Biagio church, spared during the massive 1951 landslide that blocked the Savena torrent and created the basin. On the right bank, the new town with eateries and an inn.
